Fantasy Hockey Team Names

So ... fantasy hockey on yahoo has opened up, and we're already signed up.  My usual running of a league for the Face Off Hockey Show and another team in a public league.  These are "just for fun" leagues ... no money or prizes can be put into them or gotten from them.

So I've decided to use this forum to keep track of some new names.  All names have to be less than 20 characters though, Yahoo's rule not mine.

My thoughts on new names:
* Mark it 8 Dude
* Eat your Fruit Loops
* Busted Cups
* I Thirst for Victory
* Out Saving the Queen
* Minding P's and Q's
* Then is Now
* Back to Russia
* You Ever Wonder?
* Easy Being Green
* 9x NHL Draft Champ
* Belly Full of Anger
* Just a Bit Outside
* Sweep the Leg Jonny
* Golden Tee Heroes
* Finding Becky
* Over my Helmet
* Not Dead, Just Sick
* Cute Sells Tickets
* Never Knock on Wood

Are clothes sizes getting bigger?

Ok ... I might be losing it, but I'm not certain.  I referee soccer games, I mentioned that before, so I went out before the season to get some new referee shorts and a couple new jerseys.  A new color that everyone seems geeked to wear because it's the new cool thing to do.  I don't understand why the other 4 colors of jerseys weren't good enough, but I digress.  So I head to the website to get my new refereeing gear for the season.  I order all the normal sizes for shirts and shorts.  I get everything and both shirts and shorts are huge.  I mean they almost feel like they're not even the same size that I've been wearing since college.  Is it possible that I'm getting smaller?  Maybe.  I guess I could be losing the muscle I acquired wrestling through college, and I'm replacing that with fat.  However I always thought that muscle weighed more than fat, and I'm not losing any weight.  I guess I'm replacing it with a lot of fat?  Or could sizes of clothes be changing?

I have a full set of NCAA refereeing jerseys that are larges, and they fit me pretty normally.  They might be a little bit big but I'd rather have that than get something that's too small.  I have a full set of high school jerseys that are larges and fit me pretty closely to my NCAA jerseys.  But this new one, I feel like I'm swimming in it, and don't get me started with the medium shorts that are almost down to my knees.  It's a damn good thing they have a fantastic elastic, kindof grippy, waitband.  Everything just looks big on me, but I guess I can't do much about it.  It's not like I can return any of it ... like I said, people are geeked to wear the new color.  So 2 days after I got the jersey in the mail, I was already wearing it to referee high school scrimmages.  So much for returning it.

However this brings me to the thought I had above.  Are sizes of clothes changing?  Could it just be that people in the United States are getting fatter but want to think they are wearing the same size still?  I guess I'll let you know once I go back out and buy a new wardrobe of smaller polo shirts to wear to work.

Slingbox

Well, it's set up ... I think.  There was a bit of a hiccup last night.  I got the Powerline adapters last night and went to work.  Moved the entertainment center, so I could get behind it and then set up the adapters ... one goes to the router and one goes to the Slingbox.  After about 15 seconds they were up and running ... ethernet light is on.  I even went the extra step of setting the security on the boxes, which I'm sure I wouldn't have needed anyway.  Then I moved onto setting up the Slingbox, putting all the cords in the right place, and the ethernet light is on the Slingbox too.  One more step ... setting up the Slingbox by using the website.  That's when the fun started.

I tried about 6 times ... "No Slingbox is detected on your network" ... No Slingbox!?  But the lights are on and everything.  So, out comes the laptop.  I connect it to both Powerline adapters and reset them, in order to take the security off.  That has to be the problem ... I'm sure of it.  I tried about 6 more times, on the laptop connected directly into the router, this time.  Still no Slingbox detected.  Here's where I start to panic because I've exhausted my vast knowledge of how to troubleshoot devices like this.

and then ... I did what any good troubleshooter does, reset the whole damn thing.  By holding the reset button for 5 seconds, the Slingbox went into convulsions.  Lights blinking everywhere ... a set of lights blinking that I didn't even know were on there ... and then all of the sudden, it all stopped.  I figured this was my chance, so I head back to the laptop.  Not very surprisingly that's what was needed the whole time ... apparently I needed to reset the Slingbox in order to erase all of my friend's network information. "Slingbox detected" pops up and I move onto setup.  In no time at all, I was watching my TV, on my laptop, from a room in the house without any TVs in there.  I even got it set up so I can change channels, use the guide button, and whatever else I could do sitting in my room.

Next step is to try it somewhere else and find out if I set it up correctly to watch in other places.  Hopefully I can try that out tonight, since it's pretty worthless to watch TV, on a computer, in a room without a TV ... and not just walk up the steps to actually get to my room.  Update to come on that one.

UPDATE (Friday night):  It works.  I went to my parents' house, went to the website on my mom's laptop, and started watching my TV.  My dad might be watching Fox Soccer Channel, from my house, while I'm at work.  But all is a success.  The British should be able to watch hockey now ... which is sweet for them.

UPDATE (Sunday afternoon):  Looks like I set it up correctly.  It works in England.  Great success.

Buying a House

So, buying a house is supposed to be a huge deal.  It's a ton of money up front, and something you'll be paying for the better part of your life.  But, do you buy a house for where you are in your life?  Where you think you'll be in your life 5 years from now?  10 years?  What else do you need to think about?  Buying a house seems like there's far more in it than just "buying the house".

I'll back up a little bit.  For years now I've been asked when I was going to buy a house on my own.  I have a good chunk of money saved up (thanks to refereeing), and I've started looking around because I feel like it's about time.  I just don't know what I want.  I walk into other people's houses ... acquaintances and friends alike ... and look around what they've bought.  At some points it would almost seem like I'm casing the joint for a big score later down the road.  In all reality though, I look at almost everyone's houses trying to gauge what I like or don't like.  How I would decorate the place with what I have and what I would need to buy.  How long I could live in a house that size by myself; with a girlfriend/wife; with a child.  I'm assuming you have to a least think of those scenarios.  What colors the house would be painted.

Well, I have some of the planning done at least.  I'm really into the whole black and white photography thing.  So much so that I plan on painting my living room/dining room/kitchen (if it's all one big area) a slate grey color with white trim and a white/light silver ceiling.  Everything decorating this room will be black and white pictures of places that I've been or people that I have in my life.  Every picture will have a story behind it, so my living room can be a topic of small talk in itself.  I've toyed with the thought of getting my yellow jersey from the 1999 Tour de France (Lance Armstrong's first TdF win) framed and put it at the end of the room ... it would certainly be done if I could get LA to autograph it somehow.  I'd also love to have a kitchen island or a bar height top, something that I can get bar stools for and use as a table ... but that's just a wish list now.

I also have some furniture to start myself off.  I own a full size bed frame, full size mattress/box spring, dresser, 2 seater black leather couch, maroon leather recliner (as long as I can get it back from my brother), corner unit entertainment center, TV, receiver, DVD player, Xbox, PS2, Slingbox, 50 disc CD Player, "coffee table", area rug, computer desk, a wardrobe, and a foosball table.  So basically I have enough furniture to set up my bedroom and my living room.  Hell, if I figured out how to put a Plexiglas top on the foosball table, then I have the dining room taken care of too.  Seems like more than enough for me to start off with.  I think one of my first big purchases might be a flat screen TV and a PS3 ... so I can use it as a Blu-ray player and connect it to the Internet.

Maybe I have thought about this more than I thought I had.

What a day.

Today, my friends, was a good day.  Let me list what happened:

  1. Took off work yesterday, in order to set up today's festivities
  2. Woke up early, to get in 18 holes of golf.  It was an overcast day, in the area, but with no sun out and the temperature around 85 degrees, it was amazing.  A little blustery on some holes ... I hit a driver, short I might add, into a par 3.  I made a fantastic putt for par on a par 5.  Ended up shooting a legitimate 101 (meaning that I don't approximate scores and I make my putts) ... I missed a 6 ft. putt on 18 for a 100.
  3. Stopped off at Little Caesar's on the way home for a bit of a cheese pizza and some crazy bread.  Which, by the way, is apparently just what a friend of mine was craving.  I bribed her with pizza, and went over to hang out with her and her 1 year old daughter for a couple hours.
  4. All in all, a great way to spend the day off.
So, it might not seem like much to some people, but to me it was perfect.  This just becomes a good ending to what was a good couple of days.  On Wednesday, another friend of mine gave me a Slingbox that he wasn't using anymore.  In order to figure out what a Slingbox does ... Google it, Google can help you with everything.  If you'd like to "Giovanni it", then I'll tell you.  A Slingbox takes what you have on your TV, runs the video and audio into a tiny computer like device, and broadcasts all of that information through the internet and onto a website that I can see wherever I am in the world.  I can even change channels on the TV, sitting in my room, from wherever I am.  It's a pretty sweet gizmo and it even works with internet phones too.  So today was also a good day because I  figured out how I can connect my Slingbox to the wireless internet in the house and to my FIOS box.  I'm getting some powerline boxes ... these things take the internet from one spot in the house (near your router), plugs it into the power lines that run throughout your house, and pops the internet connection back out on any power outlet in the house.  So basically, I'm taking a wire from the router to one powerline box that's connected to the outlet, and plugging in another powerline box into the outlet near the Slingbox.  Viola!  Internet to the Slingbox and I don't have to worry about the wireless connection.

What can I say, it's the little things that make me happy.  And with that being said, it's time to make the rest of the day just as fun as earlier today was.  A couple Golden Monkeys should do the trick.

Getting Laid?

What an interesting thought.  Getting laid.  Getting laid?

I've always wondered why people put so much emphasize on getting laid.  I'm guessing it's supposed to be the yin and the yang of life?  I'm not sure.  It seems to me that people are always on the search to get laid.  "I've had sex with x number of girls" ... "Let's head out tonight and see if we can bring anyone home" ... "I did this and that and in this position with a guy I didn't really know".  I can honestly say that I've never had a girlfriend/hook up/fuck buddy for long enough to say that I was "consistently getting laid".  Even when I was getting laid, it was often sporadic and would most likely just end because 1) she decided to start traveling around the country, 2) she hated her family and was staying with different friends, 3) she found someone else and basically made me feel like I was a place holder until someone better came around, or 4) she found someone that lived in the same city she did.  However, for quite a long time now, my friend has been dating a girl that's waiting for marriage in order to have sex.  Every time there's abated breath, the thought of "well I haven't been laid for x years" comes out his mouth.  I've almost come to the realization that it's just a way to keep a conversation going. I mean, some people haven't heard the whole dynamic between the two of them.  I, on the other hand, have heard it enough times that I'm close to screaming "You're doing it to you fucking self.  If you don't like it, dump her and move on".  Obviously there's more to a relationship than sex ... at least I'm hoping so because it's been quite a long time since this friend has had sex.  There has to be something else, right?

Although, then that always leads me to my next thought ... is "getting laid" really that important?  I mean, I've gone through periods of time, at least rivaling my friend's "period of dating someone waiting for marriage" without getting laid.  Am I missing out on not continually looking to get laid?  Does that make me a bad person for not always bringing the fact I'm not getting laid up in conversation?  Does it mean that I'll just forever be by myself because I won't find someone to settle for?  If I would have continually mentioned the fact that I haven't been laid in x years ... would that have gotten me laid?  Maybe found me someone to date?  Maybe not had me create an entire paragraph of questions?

Is there a fine line between being too quiet and being an asshole?  Does announcing that I don't have a girlfriend mean there's a better chance to find a girlfriend?  I mean, is there really someone out there that thinks ... "Wow, he doesn't have a girlfriend?  Good thing he said something because I'd certainly date him."?

PS: Two posts in one day?  To be fair, one was already written, it was just a copy and paste job.

My 101 List

As you can see from my "Websites I follow" section to the left there, I follow Ted's Take pretty often. A while back, July 2008 to be exact, I ran into his "101 List" of goals/expectations for his life (and just recently I finished reading his book "The Business of Happiness"). I find it amazing to see how a successful public person values his family and what he wants to do with his life.

Many things were changing, in a fairly fast paced way, at the time, so in a fit of slowing down I created my own 101 List. Now I don't have 101 things yet and at the time I post this entry I've completed about 25% of my list (it will continue to be updated), however feel free to give a read, help out if you'd like, or just take in what's going on in my life.  Mr. Leonsis ... thanks for your inspiration, and I'm sorry for copying some things.

Who knows if/when I'll accomplish these goals however dropping them into a public place like this certainly allows for some added and needed incentive to become a happier person. Thanks for reading.

Where to start?

I have friends, and said friends have blogs.  They blog about anything and everything ... raising a child, life, amusing experiences, hockey, P90X, and almost anything in between.  Most likely I won't get close to anything that other people write about.  In all honesty, this "blog" is more or less a place to put thoughts onto paper ... umm a screen ... and get them out of my head.  Hell, I'm not even sure who will end up knowing this is even here, and I actually quite like that.

See, the reason I started this now is because soccer season is coming up.  I'm an NCAA and high school soccer referee in the area.  This basically means that from August 21st to just about Thanksgiving, I have no life outside of working all day long and heading to referee, my "second job".  I use quotations because referee soccer games isn't really a job to me ... I'm being paid to run, work out, and be at some really high level soccer games.  It's still a job though because it takes a lot of time.  Already, for the coming season, I have 44 games scheduled in 10 weeks ... or basically refereeing 4-5 times a week.  Also, becoming a National Level NCAA referee means that I'm doing more NCAA games (and at higher levels) than I ever have before in my refereeing career.  Don't get me wrong though, the pay is amazing and like I said, I barely see it as a job (most of the time).  Refereeing is something that I really have fun doing and it'll be the reason that I'm able to buy a house, on my own, in the near future.  It may also be the reason that I'll be living by myself, for the first time in my life, and that I fear that I could end up living my life with a ton of acquaintances around me, but nobody that really knows me at all.

So, I guess we'll see where we go from here.  I have no clue how often this will be used or what I'll even write about.  Most likely it'll be haphazard on both accounts.  As for now though, I need to make sure my team is set for the Vuelta a EspaƱa.  The addition of some Spanish cyclists, that I don't really know, should really round my team out nicely.
